Portland chefs nominated for James Beard awards

Two Portland chefs have been nominated for 2009 James Beard Foundation awards.

Cathy Whims of Nostrana, an Italian restaurant in Southeast Portland, was nominated as Best Chef in the Northwest.
Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon, a French restaurant in Southeast Portland, was nominated as a rising Star Chef of the Year.



Established in 1990, the James Beard Foundation Awards recognize culinary professionals for excellence and achievement in their fields and continue to emphasize the Foundation's mission: to celebrate, preserve, and nurture America's culinary heritage and diversity.

The nominations were announced Monday. Winners will be announced in May.

Locally minded chefs Joseph Humphrey of Sausalito, California, and Gabriel Rucker of Portland, Oregon, divulge their favorite regional food finds.
